Tutorial para cuello de camiseta / The split cowl collar tutorial

¡Hola! Acabo de encontrar este sencillo tutorial, para aplicar un cuello asimétrico a prendas de punto. Parece muy sencillo, desde luego está muy bien explicado. ¡Tengo ganas de probarlo!

Haciendo jabón /Soap making

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Para estrenarlo, ayer estuve haciendo jabón, con el proceso en frío. No hice ningún jabón especialmente bonito o complejo, simplemente lo hice para reciclar algo de aceite que tenía reservado. Ya he hecho jabón varias veces, empecé a hacerlo simplemente para reciclar el aceite de la freidora, ya que no tenía cerca ningún contenedor de aceite. Pero me estoy aficionando, ahora uso estas pastillas para lavar los platos y también para hacer jabón líquido.
Si nunca habéis probado, la primera vez puede ser un poco pesado, parece que no se llega a sacar la "traza" del jabón, pero en realidad no es nada complicado. Hay que tener cuidado al calcular las cantidades de sosa  y agua, según los aceites añadidos y tener mucho cuidado al hacer la solución de sosa, que es muy corrosiva y libera unos vapores muy molestos cuando se está disolviendo. Pero por lo demás es bien sencillo.
Como podéis ver, se pueden usar unos cartones de leche como molde, en caso de que no tengáis otra cosa. Los moldes de silicona también son estupendos.
En este caso, usé aceite de oliva, aceite de girasol y un poco de manteca de cerdo (solo con aceite de oliva el jabón queda demasiado blando). Mañana los desmoldaré (los del molde de silicona) y cortaré las pastillas en los otros dos. Y a esperar a que cure, un mes o mes y medio.

Happy New Year! To start 2013, I've been making soap yesterday, using the cold process. I didn't make any special o pretty soap, I just wanted to recycle some used oil I had at home. I have done it several time. I started to recycle used oil, since I have no oil trash container near home. But I like to do it, and I use this soap to wash the dishes and also to make liquid soap.
If you had never made soap, maybe the first time may be a bit hard, it seems your mix never gets trace, but it is not complicated at all. You must be careful to calculate amounts of lye and water, depending on the oils you are using. And be extremelly careful handling lye, which is very caustic and releases toxic vapours while dissolving in water. Except from this, it is quite simple.
As you can see, you can use some milk tetra brick as mold, in case you don't have any other thing. Silicon molds used to bake are very good for soap-making.
In this case, I used used olive oil, mixed with some new sunflower oil and a low amount of pigfat (otherwise the soap made only with olive oil is too soft). I will take soap out of the silicon mold tomorrow, and will cut in bars the rest. And then, 4 to 6 weeks of waiting to get the soap cured.

Vela de Adviento / Advent candle

¡Hola! Mañana entramos en el último mes del año, ya se acerca la Navidad. Desde Dinamarca me traje una bonita tradición, la de las velas de adviento. Estas velas llevan marcados o pintados los números del 1 al 24, y cada día de diciembre se encienden el tiempo necesario para que se consuma el número correspondiente a la fecha, hasta el día de Nochebuena, que se encendería hasta consumirse. Como en España no encontré velas de Adviento en ningún sitio, me pinté esta. Es un diseño bastante sencillo, para otros años seguramente iré haciéndolas más adornadas. Pero su luz cálida irá acercándonos a la Navidad.

Hi there! Tomorrow we enter in December, last month of the year, Christmas is round the corner. I imported this nice tradition from Denmark, the adven candles. In these candles, numbers from 1st to 24th are marked of painted, and they must be burning each day as time as required to consume the candle to make the number of each day disappear, until Christmas Eve, when it is burning till it run out. Since I couldn't find this kind of candles in Spain, I decided to paint one. It is quite a simple motive, probably next years I will paint more elaborated designs. Anyway, its warm light will take us closer to Christmas.

Frutero hecho con periódicos / Fruit bowl made from newspapers.

¡Buenas! Hoy os traigo un frutero que hice para mi casa con papel de periódico. Usé una ensaladera de molde, y fui pegando tiras y cuadraditos de papel de periódico, creo que lleva como 10 capas de papel. Después, un par de manos de pintura y ya tenemos un frutero nuevo, además de haber dado otro uso a un periódico que hubiese acabado en la basura.

Hi there! Today I'm showing a fruit bowl that I made from an old newspaper. I used a salad bowl as mold and I just glued paper stripes and squares. I think it has 10 layers thick. After drying, a couple of paints layers and there we have a new fruit bowl, and a new life for an old newspaper that would end in the litter bin.

Modernizando una vieja mesita / Night table upcycling

¡Hola! Hoy os voy a enseñar una puesta a punto de una vieja mesita, que estaba por ahí almacenada. Estaba pintada de un color verde un tanto feo, y algo deteriorada también. Así que lo primero fue lijarla a fondo para dejar la superficie bien uniforme y eliminar la mayor cantidad de la pintura verde posible.
Hi! Today I'm showing a furniture upcycling, working with an old night table we had at home. It showed a terrible green color, and also a bit damaged. Thus, it was firstly sanded, in order to get a smooth surface to work on and also to remove as much green color as posible.

Después, un par de manos de pintura blanca, lijando entre ellas.
After that, some white coats, sanding between them.

Y finalmente el color definitivo. Elegí un color entre morado y fucsia (en el centro), y mezclé una cantidad con blanco y otro poco con negro, así obtuve los tres tonos que se ven en la fotografía. Y una línea plateada de 1,5 cm para separar cada banda de la contigua. ¡¡Ha quedado muy chula!!
And finally, the definitive painting. I chose a purple-fucsia color (middle band), mixing some paint with white and some other with black, to get the tones seen in the picture. And a silver line of 1.5 cm wide to separate different colors. It looks so gorgeus now!!

Lámpara / Lampshade

¡Buenas! En mi nueva casa no hay ni una lámpara de techo, así que decidí empezar haciendo ésta, que encontré en el siguiente enlace. Es muy sencilla de realizar, pero lleva bastante tiempo y requiere su buena dosis de paciencia, aunque el resultado bien lo merece.

Hi! Here in my new home there was no pendant lamp, so I decided to make this one, which I found in this link. It is quite simple to make, but it takes quite a lot of time and some patient is required, but the result is rather satisfactory. 

Para hacer la lámpara, se necesita una lámpara china de papel (2 €, aproximadamente), tijeras, papel (yo usé papel vegetal del horno, me gusta el color que tiene y además es resistente al calor) y pegamento. Pensaba hacerlo con la pistola de pegamento, pero al final lo hice con cola blanca.

Items required to make the lamp: a chinese paper lantern (2 €, approximately, in any Chinese store), scissors, paper (I used oven paper, I like the not-totally white color and also that this paper is hot-resistant), and glue. I was planning to use glue gun, but I finally used PVA (polyvinyl acetate).

Solo hay que cortar triángulos de papel, aproximadamente del mismo tamaño pero no tienen que ser exactamente iguales, e ir pegándolos a la lámpara, empezando por la parte de abajo.
You just have to cut triangles in paper, same size approximately but not necessary exact size. Then, glue them to the lantern, beginning on the bottom of the lamp.

Renovando sandalias / Sandal renovation

¡Hola!
Después de un tiempo sin escribir nada por culpa de una mudanza, aquí vengo con un nuevo post.

Esta vez se trata de renovar unas "getta" o sandalias japonesas, de suela de madera y con tiras de tela. Las pobres ya están viejitas, con la tela empezando a romperse como puede verse en la segunda foto.

Here I am again writing a new post, after a while without writing any entry, because I was moving to a new home. 
This time I was renovating a pair of Japanese sandals or "getta". As you can see in the pictures, they are quite old, and the clothe stripes are starting to break.

Así que decidí añadir una tela nueva, encima de las tiras existentes, aprovechando un retal bien colorido que tenía por casa.
Thus, I decided to add a new cloth over the existing strips using a piece of colorful cloth I had at home.

Y aquí está el resultado, ¡parecen nuevas!

Colcha de ganchillo / crochetted granny square quilt

¡Hola!

Siempre quise hacerme una colcha de ganchillo. Como me gustan los cuadrados de colores (granny square), me lancé y así ha quedado la colcha. 

I always wanted to make a crochetted quilt. Since I like granny squares, I went for it, and this is the result.

Algunas lanas que tenía por casa eran demasiado gruesas, así que hice algunos cuadrados del mismo tamaño que el resto, pero diferente diseño. Y para unir unos cuadrados a otros usé punto de escapulario con lana de distinto color.
I also used some yarns to thick to be included in the squares. So I made other squares, same size but different desings. And I attached the squares with herringbone stitches, with several colored yarns.
